Since her introduction to textiles in 2007 Nicola Brown has studied extensively in Ireland, Europe and the US to learn new techniques and develop her fine art textile practice. As a mature student, Nicola choose not to go down the traditional art college route but instead attends technique specific workshops, masterclasses and symposia with international tutors whose work she admires, this is an ongoing process. Her current practice explores the use of eco printing to impart colour directly from organic materials onto silk, wool, handmade felt and vintage linen. Since the summer of 2017 Nicola has also been experimenting with organic indigo and her installation titled “Transient Blues” is one of the pieces selected for Sculpture in Context. This annual exhibition takes place at the National Botanic Gardens in Glasnein, Dublin from 7th September to 20th October 2018 and is a must visit for any sculpture enthusiasts.
In addition to creating exhibition pieces and work for sale Nicola delivers felting and eco printing workshops in Ireland, Europe, North America and Australia. She also offers regular online classes throughout the year for those that are short of time or not available to travel. Please consider joining her workshop email list to be kept informed of upcoming events.
Since 2012 Nicola and US felter Dawn Edwards have moderated the international group FeltUnited, currently there are over 6500 members active on Facebook.
